10 Rules for Working in My Studio: Productivity, Respect, and No Fish

In this article — and video — I share 10 rules I follow in my home studio. These rules are designed to look after the space, stay productive, and ensure I don’t squander the potential of the studio.

I’ve always been a fan of rules in the workplace — not draconian ones, but simple guidelines that help people get things done while cultivating a space that enriches life.

In most workplaces, we rely on unwritten rules, norms, and expectations. Written rules are rare, usually limited to health and safety. Yet there’s something powerful about calling out specific rules.

This video was inspired by Tom Sachs’ wonderful “10 Bullets” video and zine. There really is power in having clear rules to make the most of spaces, work, and life.

What You’ll See in the Video

I share details about the studio itself and why I have separate areas for different kinds of work. I also explain my cleaning routine, and why a tidy, organised workspace is essential for productivity—at least for me.

These rules haven’t yet made it to a poster on my wall, but I do keep them on a sheet of paper next to my desk, so they’re always in view.

The 10 Studio Rules

  1. Treat the building with respect – It’s a space I’m fortunate to have; respecting it means it can serve me well.
  2. Keep the space clean – A tidy workspace clears the mind.
  3. No shoes in the studio – A small gesture, but it keeps the floors clean and the space pleasant.
  4. Organise the space around outcomes – Everything should have a purpose and support what I want to achieve.
  5. Do not squander the space – Use it wisely; don’t let it go to waste.
  6. Don’t get distracted – Focus is key. The studio is for work, thought, and creation.
  7. Everything goes back in its place – Order helps efficiency and reduces mental clutter.
  8. It’s not all about work – Allow the space to support enjoyment, reflection, and creativity too.
  9. Keep evolving the space – Adapt and improve the environment as your work and needs evolve.
  10. No fish in the studio – Yes, really. Please don’t microwave fish.

Why Rules Matter

Rules like these create structure, focus, and respect — both for the space and for yourself. They’re not restrictive; instead, they enhance creativity, productivity, and well-being. In my experience, a clear framework allows more freedom to explore ideas and get work done.

I’d love to hear from you: what rules do you follow in your workspace?

And yes — just to be clear — don’t microwave fish.
