This short Video Notes explainer draws on Laura Archera Huxley’s insight that we have the power to make others feel better or worse — and that choosing the former lifts everyone involved.

Small, intentional acts of positive influence can enrich workplace interactions, strengthen relationships, and improve the way we feel at work ourselves. It’s a simple, human idea with meaningful impact.

Workplace culture often shifts on the smallest interactions: a tone of voice, a moment of empathy, a brief acknowledgement, or a conversation that leaves someone feeling lighter instead of heavier.

Huxley’s observation — that making others feel better is more enjoyable and ultimately makes us feel better too — offers a practical lens for everyday leadership.

By approaching colleagues with more generosity and awareness, we create micro-moments of uplift that compound into trust, collaboration, and a more energising work environment.

That doesn't mean we should avoid hard conversations or tricky situations, far from it. But in our everyday interactions we should aim to lift others, spirit, hope and momentum often follow.
